As a matter of fact, it's ALL just 'A Matter Of Trust'

This particular series, 'A Matter Of Trust', created back in 2014, deals with some pretty basic human emotions, if not one of the most basic: trust. A small, simpel word, but o so crucial for human relationships. A word too often used too lightly, misused, abused. And I guess we all are or have been guilty of that, at one or more times in our life. Of abusing someone's trust. Ignored, overlooked, brushed aside. I know I have done so, probably not once, not twice, but a couple of times.

Then again, my trust too, has been stood upon, trampled, crushed, many times. And as I am only human, that left some pretty nasty scars. Perhaps there a few of them visible, tangible, in this series. Then again, I am not revealing everything. I am not sure, after all, if I can trust you, can I? 

After all, trust is an extremely precious good to give. Trust. A precious good to give, yet so very easy to waste. And once gone, extremely hard to obtain back. As a matter of fact, it's often not just 'A Matter Of Trust'.

Trust me, I know... 

 

How ''Willow Minnows'' crossed my path again

In a recent blogspost, I wrote about the birth of my series ''Willow Minnows'' back in 2012. And this turned out to be one of those rare cases I started working on what I thought was a brandnew series in 2014 and, much to my surprise, found out that these were actually new additions to ''Willow Minnows'', without consciously having intended them to be so!

The thing is, I only saw this when these set of new drawings was done and I just couldn't find a proper name for them. So I kept laying them aside, and back to them, and so on for quite a couple of days. Untill it suddenly hit me. There was this underlying vibe to it and also some clear visual elements that absolutely made them members of the ''Willow Minnows'' family.

The great thing of all this, is that I can see some clear development in this series, while at the same time still sticking to its original ''theme'' and using some of the same visual elements (the headphones and skateboards were an obvious sign) as some of other series as well. The loudspeakers however have been prominent in a series like ''Innovation In Carnation'' (which to this day is still ongoing as well).

It's a perfect example of how I am continiously surprised by how my art develops over time, how it shapes itself rather than me doing it for them. How it chooses and goes its own paths without even me, its creator, knowing it. And I wouldn't want it any other way!

 

A Perfect Day to say goodbye: just a little two-piece I am sharing

 

Just showcasing a little two-piece I created way back in the winter of 2014. The most handsome, sweetest cat in the whole universe had just made his final journey out into The Great Beyond. It was one of those sad, grey, dreary days that the skies just can't stop crying and you feel they are crying because of your loss and your loss only. Pathetic, I know, but then again, we all feel like that sometimes, for some stupid reason or for no reason at all.

Then, Lou Reed's  ''A Perfect Day'' popped up in my playlist. And out came these two: 
''A Perfect Day | A Good Day''

And the skies stopped crying. The sun came out.

And it turned out to be a perfect day after all. A perfect day to say goodbye. 

''Stagefright'' shines a light on being in the spotlights

 
''Stagefright'' is a series of, for now, four drawings, I made during one rainy afternoon. One of those afternoons that nothing seems to work and all that should go right goes horridly wrong. So, drawing and creating Witty Art is always the better option.

That rainy night, ''Stagefright'' emerged from my mind and onto paper. I don't remember what made these images come out, I only know that once my pen touched the paper, I had to draw something in black and white, without the use of any colours.

What lies beneath the actual image, or what triggered it: I don't even know myself, except it has something to do with both loving and hating being in the spotlights. And sometimes, just sometimes, there is no way to avoid it. When taking to the stage, you gotta face the fear. Or something like that.

Well, the audience at least.

First glimpse of new series: 'Crawl On The Catwalk (Bigger Steps)'

As I started posting pictures of another new series called 'Crawl On The Catwalk' both on my Facebook page and my Instagram and Pinterest accounts, positive reactions were flooding in. So I decided to post some more snap shots of the nearly-finished drawings of this particular series, which features a hyperactive, if not slightly hysterical, fashion designer and his entourage rapidly spiralling out of control. From Haute Coutûre to Haute Bizarre, or more like Panic on the Runway or something like it. 

 

With this series, I actually had no idea what I would end up with, except I had this firm idea of the main character and his mantra ''Take Bigger Steps, You Must Take Bígger Steps!''. How the other characters evolve, the models, the seamstresses, the whole entourage of a well-established ''House of Fashion'', I had no idea. I've got to say, the result swings right between the surrealistic, dystopian world of the Singles and the more upbeat irony of my more cartoonesque art.

And yes, I like it that way, to be honest. But let's see what the final result will look like, as I hope to post the first five finished works online this week!

Eerste terugblik expo Bij Gelegenheid tijdens Route du Nord

En na drie intensieve, hectische dagen is het weer voorbij: vrijdag de opbouw, vrijdagavond de opening, een drukbezochte zaterdag- en zondagmiddag en dan ... dan weer afbreken. De expositie van Bij Gelegenheid tijdens Route du Nord zit er weer op. In die korte periode is echter weer iets moois tot stand gebracht, dat een blijvende indruk heeft achtergelaten bij de vele bezoekers die onze expositie hebben bezocht. En dat mijn mede-'Bij Gelegenheders' Astrid van Rijn, Heleen van Zantvoort, Laura Zwaneveld en Margot Annuschek met een gevoel van trots, blijdschap en ontroering achterliet. ''Een warm bad,'' zeiden we meerdere keren tegen elkaar. En zo was het ook.

Wat vooral opviel, is hoezeer de meeste bezoekers onze expositie vooral als één geheel hebben ervaren, ondanks de diversiteit in werk. Dat er een duidelijk zichtbare en voelbare onderlinge band is tussen ons vijf, hoe verschillend onze discplines ook mogen zijn. Eén bezoeker verwoordde het kernachtig: ''Het heeft allemaal iets kwetsbaars en ook iets heel krachtigs tegelijk. Dat raakt. Mooi.''

Trots, blijdschap en ontroering zijn ook de gevoelens die overheersen bij mij persoonlijk na alle reacties op Witty Art. Een greep:

''Grappig, maar behalve lachen doet je het ook nadenken.''
''Best wel twisted, en toch wel erg geinig.''
''Dit werk kan ook zomaar door een man gemaakt zijn, maar u bent duidelijk geen man!'' (voor alle duidelijkheid, degene die deze opmerking plaatste was een vrouw). 
''Is dit een reflectie van jouw gemoedstoestand of jouw reactie op die van de wereld?'' 
''Moet ik hier iets van vinden? Hier kan je toch niets van vinden, tja, behalve, nou ja, dat het me niet loslaat.''

En er was ook nog iemand die alleen maar ''Wow'' kon uitbrengen. 

Maar het gesprek wat mij het meeste bijbleef was die met de toeschouwster die er heel lang, en die mij de directe vraag stelde: ''Ontstaat uw werk nu uit het licht of uit de duisternis?'' Waarna zich een heel mooi, intiem gesprek ontrolde over het schemergebied tussen beiden, over het cruciale verschil tussen ironie en sarcasme, tussen ironie en cynisme. Precies het ''no man's land'' waar het meeste van mijn werk het licht ziet.

Beiden waren we benieuwd wat ze er van vindt nadat ze alle 75 (inmiddels!) Singles heeft gezien, want die afspraak zit inmiddels in de planning. Wordt, kortom, vervolgd.

Locatie expositie Witty Art tijdens Route du Nord bekend!

Gisteren was de info-bijeenkomst voor alle exposerende kunstenaars tijdens Route du Nord 2014. De twaalfde editie alweer van deze jaarlijkse Rotterdamse kunstmanifestatie, ooit begonnen als pop-up expo in leegstaande panden op en rondom de Zwaanshals in de wijk Het Oude Noorden, inmiddels uitgegroeid tot een driedaags multi-discplinair kunstfestival dat sinds een jaar of drie plaatsvindt in het hippe ZoHoKwartier nabij Hofplein in Rotterdam.

Uiteraard was ik hierbij aanwezig, net als de vier andere leden van creatief collectief Bij Gelegenheid, met wie ik tijdens Route du Nord zal exposeren, net als vorig jaar: Astrid van Rijn, Heleen van Zantvoort, Margot Annuschek en Laura Zwaneveld.

Eerst kwamen Eddy Kaijser en Marcel Kollen aan het woord namens Route du Nord (foto links). Zij vertelden wat over de ontstaansgeschiedenis en gaven verdere informatie over wat er de komende week staat te gebeuren wat betreft productie, de opbouw, de inrichting e.d. En natuurlijk het allerbelangrijkste: de indeling! Wat zou de precieze locatie van onze expositie deze keer zijn? Wij van Bij Gelegenheid luisterden aandacht toe .. drumroll ... (foto rechts).

Nu, een mooiere, rauwere en 'Rotterdamser' locatie hadden we niet kunnen wensen: de Binnenplaats van Station Hofplein it is, bij de Hofbogen, pal naast Jazzcafe BIRD! Als je het over een Rotterdams icoon hebt ... Een passender omgeving voor mijn Negen ''Singles'' had ik niet durven dromen.

Volgende week beginnen we met inrichten, vrijdagavond 26 september om 19.00 uur moet alles klaar en op en top zijn voor de opening van onze groepsexpo tijdens deze alweer twaalfde editie van Route du Nord! En ik kan jullie vertellen, we hebben er zin in! En natuurlijk maakten we voor ''de gelegenheid'' even een groepsfotootje!

Motherly, Smotherly Love but love none the less: ''Mummies' Dearest''

Another recent series that saw the light is ''Mummies' Dearest''. I have not yet dedicated an individual blogpost to this series, but as it's turned out to be one of my own personal favourites, I feel it's now time to write one. 

 
''Mummies' Dearest'' is all about a Mummy's enduring, all-consuming love for ''her'' little ones. Perhaps, not at all very healthy love. You could call it motherly, smotherly love, I suppose. But, nonetheless, still love. And in a cold, heartless, even dystopian world, any kind of love will do. Even for 'Mummmies'. 

Despite its rather heavy subject, somehow, I thoroughly enjoyed creating this series. I just took a liking towards the main character in the drawings, as she (yes, she is definitely a she, well, to me she is - feel free to think or feel otherwise) has some definite charm about her appearance, even though the whole scenery contains something disturbing. 

As someone recenty told me: ''Charmingly disturbing or disturbingly cute, can't exactly pinpoint what it is about your work in general and definitely about this series - but, for me, it's one of those two.''

For now, I have finished the first six drawings. There will be more. This is one of those series I feel I am not done with yet. It'll be interesting to see how this one will develop itself further. Will this end badly, like ''too much love will kill you in the end'' kinda thing or is there some kind of an escape route. Or is it really all that bad?
