New solo showcase of Witty Art opens at Saturday February 8th!

(scroll below for the English version of this text):

‘’It’s A Wander-Ful World’’

Zaterdag 8 februari a.s. om 16.00u
Inloop vanaf 15.00 uur

Bereikbaarheid:

NO part of ART Rotterdam, BUT indeed a great opportunity for all you friend, fans and followers of Witty Art out there:

I’m happy to invite you to the opening of a small but ever so great solo showcase of my Witty Art:

‘’It’s A Wander-Ful World’’

Saturday February 8th at 16.00hrs
Doors open at 15.00hrs

Location is the quaint and cosy neighborhood living room called De Woonkamer van de Burgemeester - which literally translates into: The Mayor's Living Room, located at Burgemeester Meineszlaan 102 Rotterdam.

De Woonkamer will serve some drinks, there will be some nibbles and ofcourse, I will be around! And, ofcourse, there will be LOTS of Witty Art to be seen!

About the exhibition:
‘It’s a Wander-Ful World’ will show a selection of my work throughout the years 2013 – up till now. It’ll range from previously shown work, seldomly shown work and even brandnew drawings, the ink barely dry! Well ok, as a matter of speaking, that is.

This expo‘It’s A Wander-Ful World’ will also see the launch of digital Witty Art Prints, which will be available from Saturday February 8th (both in limited editon as well as ‘on demand’ – more details to be unveiled at the opening!)

How to get there:
All three tramlines 21, 23 and 24, stop Vierambachtsstraat. Cross the street, pass local bar De Burgemeester on your left side and you find yourself in the Burgemeester Meineszlaan. Keep walking straight ahead and you'll bump into De Woonkamer.

Both buslines 38 (stop Burgemeester Meinezsplein) and 44 (stop Vierambachtsstraat/Heemraadssingel) will get you there as well.

A major thank you to De Woonkamer van de Burgemeester for so generously opening up their livingroom to local artists such as myself and for sponsoring the drinks; especially Hans de Heus for all his support!

Brandnew Witty Art at a brandnew exhibition at the Marriott Hotel Rotterdam!

Photo: Yvonne Ottervanger

An artist's life often resembles that of a rollercoaster, well, mine certainly is. As my Open Studio Weekend went out of the window because I became unexpectedly and horridly ill with the flu, a new opportunity arose when I was offered the opportunity to join the latest Fresh Expo by Bubble Art Projects at the Rotterdam Marriott Hotel.

An excellent opportunity to showcase brandnew Witty Art, from a brandnew series: ''Something Fishy Going Wrong (Part 1) | Jellyfish Don't Play By The Rules!'. I will share more details of and a bit of background behind this series in a later blog.

So, last Saturday July 8th I found myself in the lobby of the Marriott Hotel in my hometown Rotterdam, in the company of seven other extremely gifted female artists, ready to get our artwork exhibited. Together, it didn't take us long to get our works up on the walls, after which each of us was given some time to talk a bit about our work. It was really interesting to hear more about each artwork, how they came to be and in what way the artists were driven to create their work.

When it was my turn, I told a bit about myself, about my work as an artist/illustrator and, overall, visual storyteller and how I like to visualize the world that lives in my head: The World of Witty Art and all its inhabitants, the outcasts, the sole soul survivors, the perfectly imperfect misfits that are so dear to my heart. And we spoke about the symbolism behind the jellyfish - but, as said, more on that in a later blog.

(photo: Yvonne Ottervanger)

Then, it was time for an extended three course lunch together, during which we exchanged more thoughts and ideas about our artwork, art in general and experiences as professional artists. Connections were established and even some plans for future collaborations were made!

It was a very well spent and inspirtational afternoon and I can safely say that for me, I will definitely exhibit my work through Bubble Projects again, as it was a very satisfying experience and well organised event.

The Fresh Summer Expo at the Rotterdam Marriott, Weena 686 Rotterdam, can be seen up and untill with Friday August 30th and shows a very diverse range of original artwork by Grace Wychowanska, Julia Maximova, Izabella Verhagen, Yvonne Ottervanger, Rita Camphuijsen, Dinie van Buuren and Christy de Witt.

So, if you happen to be around the coming weeks, send me a message and who knows, we can meet up over a cup of coffee at the Marriot Rotterdam and I can show you the exhibition in person!

Witty Art to be seen in Theater Rotterdam Schouwburg as part of The Museum of Dogs!

Ok, now it's finally official! Behind the scenes, Team Dogparade010 has been working really hard on a new project and it's gonna be a real highlight for me, both as part of the team as well as an artist: The Museum of Dogs, a co-production by Dogparade010 and Theater Rotterdam.

This pop-up Museum of Dogs will open its doors in the main hall of Theater Rotterdam Schouwburg, showcasing a range of dog-themed artwork by both professional, amateur and outsider artists from Rotterdam. Some well-known, some relatively known, some completey unknown to the mainstream audience. Amongst them, yours truly - and I am indeed very proud to be part of this exhibition, which basically is a collection of ''all things dog'' in the line of ''The Museum of Everything''. All works will be shown ''French Salon Style'', creating what we have named The Wall of Dogs

Simultaneously, we will show a collection of dogphotography, again by both professionals and amateurs as well as special photoselections provided by the Dutch Fotomuseum Rotterdam (about 100 year photography of dogs and humans) and the Belasting & Douanemuseum Rotterdam ((featuring dog with jobs like snifferdogs and therapydogs). This Digital Wall of Dogs will be shown on the lifesize Mediawand (basically the biggest TV-screen in the country) in the Hal of Theater Rotterdam.

You can find all information on the flyer, which again is a creation from Dogparade010's trusted designer Grootzus.

All this because of the rerun of the popular Theater Rotterdam familyshow ''Woef Side Story'', a musical about streetdog Toto and upperclass dog Marina who fall in love together, with a whole LOT of consequences, but in the end, love wins. Romeo and Julia go doggystyle, so to speak.  It's, ofcourse an adaption of the famous musical ''West Side Story'', but with dog characters in the lead and Dutch versions of the music score originally written by Leonard Bernstein.

Well, if this is not something look forward to, whether you are a doglover or not, I don't know what is.

The official opening of The Museum of Dogs is on Tuesday December 19th at 17.00 hrs and after that, the museum will open daily from 11.00 to 23.00 hrs, all the way through Christmas up and untill with the final closer at January 6th, 2018: the one-day mini festival We Love Dogs.

So, what exactly am I going to show for this special exhibit then? Well, that will be revealed in another blogpost, SOON.

A new studio for both Witty Art & Witty Projects (and much more): Studio PuRRR

So, I've been a bit behind on updating this Witty Art Blog - but for a good reason! The last couple of weeks have been insanely busy with preparing the move to my new workplace at Studio PuRRR, the creative artstudio I set up last year, together with my creative partner and fellow artist Deborah van de Beld. For a while, Studio PuRRR was a travelling pop up initiative, trying out some small-scale creative and culinary concepts on various locations - but pretty soon we found a more permanent place for ourselves.

We have moved into Schiezicht, a local, Delfshaven based community initiative, founded and ran by a group of dedicated locals who share the same views on grass roots community and place making, creative and social entrepreneurship, local economy and sustainability. It was there, when looking for a venue to host our production Horen Zien en Schranzen (an art and literature event featuring Dutch poets and singer-songwriters) that we stumbled across this really great space with the full potential of turning it into the ideal artstudio and the perfect homebase for both our creative companies and artist practices, as well as all other individual and combined projects: Studio PuRRR.

And as our luck would have it, the Schiezicht crew were looking for some new faces to join their team as well. So, after a couple of talks, we reached an agreement and we got the keys to what's now our very own studio!

Now, an important part of this agreement with Schiezicht is that both Deborah and I are both part of Schiezicht's core crew, helping this initiative grow and develop further. I do so by taking care of external communications (digital newsletter, website, and so on) and Deborah is part of the cooking team, which serves tasty homemade meals to the neighborhood at a friendly price. This fits seamlessly with our own vision on creative and social entrepreneurship, creating additional social value for the community.
Schiezicht means so much as ''view on the river Schie'', very apptly named as it's located directly on the riverside of the 'Delfshavense Schie' in an area of Rotterdam called Delfshaven - to be precise, on the outer fringe of a neighborhood called Bospolder Tussendijken. Perhaps not the most glamorous part of booming Rotterdam (hot, hip and happening on all kinds of To Be Lists and in the middle of the grip of gentrification) with high unemployment rates and many vulnerable people living in the margins of society. But to us, it's one of the most interesting because of its combination of a cultural diversity, social resilience and creativity, outer edginess and hidden gems of local entrepreneurship, artists and makerspaces.

And sure enough, we aren't the only ones, as Bospolder Tussendijken managed to grasp the attention of The Duchess of Cambridge, Catherine Middleton, who visited the area and it's local makerspace Bouwkeet in person only very recently. Read an impression of her visit both here and here. Unfortunately for us, we were still busy renovating our own artists space then, but rest assured, we are more than ready for her next visit!

Either way, I for myself am extremely happy for the opportunity to be working in this new studio, which, in more than one way, proves to be the perfect venue for not only creating Witty Art and developing myself further artistically but to roll out further Witty Projects, in a way that suit me - because I firmly belief in the concept of commercidealism: the ability to run a succesful business and a profitable company, that will enable me to sustain myself as well as generating some form of social return. What exactly, I am right in the middle of finding that out - as I am still rebuilding my life and my business, after having lost my house and my home about almost two years ago. A process, I've been trying to visualise in my Witty Art Book ''My Life In Limbo'' (which I am behind updating too, will do so SOON!)

It's still a long way to go. It's still a steep hill to climb.
But I no longer feel it's a whole mountain.
And I've found, that going downhill no longer means hitting rock bottom.
I've found that rock bottom isn't that scary after all, too.

And I am determind to make this work.
Because I no longer simply believe I have a lot to offer to society.
I know I do.
And this time, I will do so in the way that is right for both society and me.

De PDF van mijn Straatnieuws-interview is online!

(for my English followers, please scroll below for a brief summary of this blogpost)

Rowling voor de jaarlijkse meeting van The Harvard Alumni Association in 2008, getiteld: “The Fringe Benefits of Failure, and the Importance of Imagination,” at the Annual Meeting of the Harvard Alumni Association:

“Rock bottom became the solid foundation on which I rebuilt my life.”

For my English followers: In a previous blogpost I wrote about the interview with me that was published in the Dutch version of 'The Big Issue''': the monthly paper Straatnieuws Rotterdam-Den Haag, a magazine published on behalf of and sold by homeless or vulnerably housed people. Now that a new issue has been released, the edition featuring my interview has been published online, too. Unfortunately, this interview is in Dutch only for now, but I am working on a translation or at least a brief summary of it in English.

But, what I can and will share with you now, is the fact I drew much inspiration and strength from a quote from author J.K. Rowling, when she delivered her Commencement Address, “The Fringe Benefits of Failure, and the Importance of Imagination,” at the Annual Meeting of the Harvard Alumni Association:

“Rock bottom became the solid foundation on which I rebuilt my life.”

Speaking from having been and still bouncing back from my very own rock bottom, I could not agree more.

A spontaneous video 'shoot' resulted in a really nice video of my Witty Art opening!

So, what's even more cool about the opening of my work last night at Ani & Haakien, is that one of the hostel guests actually turned out to be one extremely talented film maker (and much more than that), Alrizki Marino, who made a very nice & neat little video of moi-myself, in front of my work. The result is really, really cool - and I am really, really pleased with it!

More than ready for the opening of Witty Art at Hostel Ani & Haakien!

Last couple of days, I have been working pretty hard to get everything ready for the upcoming opening of my expo at Hostel Ani & Haakien. Which actually is this very night, tonight. So, you can imagine there's is quite a bit of the so-called 'infamous creative stress' involved ;-)

Anyway, so far I am really happy with how this showcase of my work turned out, especially as it offers both the more cartoonlike side of my work as well as the more surrealistic part of Witty Art.

After long deliberation, I finally opted to show a little series I never really had the opportunity of sharing during an exhibition before: ''Pin Bear Wizard'', from 2013. Featuring yet another brave little bear who has indeed been dealt some pretty bad cards by Life. He is accompanied by a somewhat sinister ''ScapeGoat-ish'' character, of which not even I am quite sure whether he is the bad guy or not. And me being me, and Witty Art being Witty Art, I like to pretty much leave that one open...

But, as you can see clearly, the style of drawing for ''Pin Bear Wizard'' is much more cartoonlike and much more colourful than the other work I selected for the exhbition. Series like ''Lost Bear' but also The Singles are much more surreal and dreamlike - though they all most definitely belong to the bizarre universe that Witty Art is made from.

All in all, I am really happy with how this selection highlights both sides of my work (and my world, for that matter). It's not that I favor one above the other, though I do like the how people sometimes have different perceptions of what Witty Art stands for. Is it cartoonart, figurative or even illustration art? Is is more autonomous, abstract even?

Now, I am not one for labelling much, but sometimes doing so helps adding a bit of context. So, name or label it whatever you yourself feel like. Whatever feels good for you - and if you don't feel the need to name it anything at all, then that's just fine. All I am after, is that my work speaks to you and manages to strike a chord or two. That it evokes some kind of emotion. That it does not leaves you untouched. Whatever the emotion may be.

And, if does do anything for you at all, that is also fine by me. I just love for people to be honest with my work - as my work as about as brutally honest as I can get. In my work, there are no walls of social conventions to be upheld, no masks to hide behind, to pretence what so ever. It is what it is. And it is what I am. No more, no less. Just me, just Witty.

Working on the selection for my upcoming Witty Art Expo at Hostel Ani & Haakien!

Working on the selection of my upcoming exhibition at Hostel Ani & Haakien, which opens at Thursday, September 15h - which is in exactly one week from now. That means, just seven more days to determine which artworks I am going to show!

So, which will be ''The Chosen Ones''? To be honest, at this point, I have literally no idea. But the ones posted here today, are very, very likely candidates to be considered worthy of selection.

The coming days, I will post frequent updates of the selection progress on the eventpage on Facebook and, ofcourse, here on this blog as well.

Also, you can find all information on the ''where, when & what time'' on this blog too!

Both the exhibition and opening progamme are organised by Pica Pica 010, Rotterdam.

Proud at my interview for the Dutch version of 'The 'Big Issue''

(Please scroll down for an English summary of this post)

(English version below this picture)

Recently, I was interviewed for the monthly paper Straatnieuws Rotterdam-Den Haag, a magazine published on behalf of and sold by homeless or vulnerably housed people. And I have no shame in admitting out in the open that I am one of them - and have been so for just over a year now, after having been forced to sell my house.

As followers of Witty Art will know, I previously blogged about the turn of events that uprooted my whole private and professional life and the enormous impact it had on me. It forced me to take a couple of steps back and to look at my life, both as a person as well as a creative professional - a creator of art.

A year has passed since I had to leave the place I called my home. A year has passed since I began my life as a 21st century city nomad. A year of confrontation and inner conflict, of almost crippling self doubt and a painfully low self esteem. A year of hitting rock bottom and hitting it hard.

But also a year of newly found love. Of new friendships and rekindling old ones. Of finding help and support in the most unexpected of places. Of not only confrontation, but more so challenges and, thus, changes. Of loss, yes, but more so of being enriched. Of letting go of old ideas, embracing new ones, new plans, new visions.

A year, in which I discovered that my ''rock bottom'' is nothing else but my own solid foundation - on which I will rebuild my life and my work.

These are the things I talk about in this interview. About living AND working as a homeless person. Because you see, I never EVER stopped working. I  never stopped creating Witty Art, I never stopped doing Witty Projects. Never in this whole year the thought of stopping crossed my mind - not even once. And it never will. It's what kept me going - that, and the (sometimes) overwhelming support of some really special persons in my life.

It;'s stuff I blogged about before, as I wrote about my Witty Art Book 'My Life In Limbo' (which, as a matter of fact, I am still working on, albeit on a far less regular basis) It's stuff I talk about in this interview. So I hope many of my followers who live in the The Hague-Rotterdam area will buy one or more copies - and by doing so help another homeless person to make a bit of a decent living. And, if for some reason they can't or won't (each and everyone to their own), I do hope they will at least donate that one thing that, perhaps, does not always come easily but we so easily take for granted too. That one thing that goes a long, long, LONG, way.

Kindness.

Expo Wissel bij Heilige Rotterdamse Boontjes: nieuwe Witty Art aan de muur!

(short summary in English below)

Stuur me gerust een email of stuur me een bericht me via Facebook!

Heilige Rotterdamse Boontjes vind je aan het Burgemeester Meineszplein 19, Rotterdam.

To celebrate the one year collaboration between Rotterdam's coolest coffee & barista bar Heilige Rotterdamse Boontjes, I decided to select six new artworks to exhibit. I decided to showcase a selection of of four works from my new series ''Minor Kitchen Sink Dramas'' and two from an older, but very well loved series: ''Innovoation In Carnation.''

For those of you who want to see some Witty Art for real, up close and personal: if you happen to live or visit the city of Rotterdam, The Netherlands, please pay a visit to coffee bar Ookami, at Burgemeester Meineszplein 19. Located in the area known as Rotterdam West (Middelland).
A very cool place to have a nice hot cup of latte, espresso or a fresh mint-ginger tea - but also because they serve coffe with a mission: to help unemployed yough (often with a bit of a history of living on the edge, so to speak) getting a new chance in life by becoming proper baristas!

Heilige Rotterdamse Boontjes is located at Burgemeester Meineszplein 19, Rotterdam.

(summary of this blogpost in English below)

So, the last day of my Witty Art Expo at Stroop Rotterdam was a great success as well. Quite a good turn of out visitors who took the opportunity to enjoy my series 'Minor Kitchen Sink Dramas', which got some pretty good response from onlookers. As you can imagine, I am very happy with that because it is a great motivation to explore this series further.

During this closer, we also had the try out of a new pop up cookery: Tante Timmie Kookt. Or in English: Tante Timmie's Kitchen.

Tante Timmie is one fine cook. She likes to cook. A lot. And what she even likes more, is to share her cookery with others. Healthy, freshly prepared meals for a nice price. So, she served up one tasty, vegetarian meal for lunch last Saturday for those visitors who were interested. And how they were, as you can see on the pictures!

Tante Timmie Kookt is a concept by Studio PuRRR, a new creative initiative by artists Deborah van de Beld and Christy de Witt.

With special thanks all the exhibition's visitors and, ofcourse, to the Stroop Rotterdam team, especially Marjolein Dekker, for making my Witty Art Expo possible, including the first try out of Tante Timmie's Kitchen.
