Mooie afsluiter expositie Beelden Op Locatie!

De tijd vliegt, en zo was het ineens weer het allerlaatste weekend van de expositie ''Beelden Op Locatie'' in Kookstudio Mix & Evermore. We sloten echter af in stijl, want met name de laatste dag trok op de valreep nog een aardig aantal toeschouwers en was daarmee een waardige afsluiter van een vier weken durende, goed bezochte en evenzo goed ontvangen expositie.

 

Terugkijkend op de afgelopen vier weken, kan ik alleen maar zeggen dat het in alle opzichten een geslaagde expositie was: het bijna naadloos samengaan van de werken en stijlen van zes totaal verschillende, individuele kunstenaars, binnen een spontaan onstane en prettig verlopen samenwerking. 

 

Graag wil ik hierbij ook mijn grote dank en waardering uitspreken voor de twee organisatoren achter Beelden Op Locatie en tevens mede-exposanten Jolanda Drukker Murray en Harry Schumacher, die veel van hun tijd, energie en creatieve krachten in de totstandkoming van dit project hebben gestopt. Eén ding is zeker: een creatieve samenwerking zit er, in een of andere vorm, aan te komen, ergens in 2015.

Natuurlijk ook mijn grote waardering voor mijn andere mede-exposanten: Dorothé Arts, Petra Jongmans en Noortje Stortelder. Nieuwe contacten zijn gelegd en wie weet waar dat naar toe kan gaan leiden!

Daarnaast ook veel dank en waardering voor Kookstudio Mix (Crista Hammel) en Evermore (Ian Pieters) voor het ter beschikking stellen van hun prachtige ruimte!

Last but not least, een grote dank aan al die mensen die de afgelopen weken de moeite hebben genomen om deze mooie expositie te bezichtigen. Een flink aantal liet positieve, lovende, enthousiaste en mooie reacties achter in het gastenboek, waarvan hier een (kleine) selectie:

Leuk beeldverslag Delfshaven TV van expositie 'Beelden Op Locatie'

Tijdens het drukbezochte Broodje COiD, waarover ik onlangs deze blogpost schreef, was ook Delfshaven TV aanwezig. Het resultaat daarvan: een ontzettend leuk, vlot beeldverslag van zowel deze creatieve netwerkbijeenkomst als de expositie 'Beelden Op Locatie'. Inclusief Miss Witty over .. Witty Art natuurlijk!



De expositie 'Beelden Op Locatie' in Kookstudio Mix is nog gedurende het weekend van 29 en 30 november geopend voor publiek en wel van 13.00 tot 17.00 uur. Mis het niet!

Opening 'Beelden Op Locatie' geslaagd en goed bezocht

Op zaterdag 8 november jl. opende de expositie 'Beelden Op Locatie', de winterexpositie in Kookstudio Mix aan Coolhaven 160b, waar ook Evermore Koffie, Thee & Chocolade zich bevindt. En we kunnen spreken van een absoluut geslaagde opening, want gedurende de hele middag werd de expositie goed gezocht door een flink aantal geïnteresseerde bezoekers.

En ook deze keer trok Witty Art veel belangstelling. Veel mensen vroegen zich af waar de serie 'Mummies' Dearest' nu over gaat: gaat het nu wel of niet over moederschap en wat hebben die letterlijk 'ingewikkelde' mummies er nu mee te maken. Het leverde boeiende gespreksstof op tussen toeschouwers onderling; en tussen toeschouwers en mijzelf (foto's hieronder: Wendy Scholten)

Selectie Witty Art voor 'Beelden Op Locatie' bekend: ''Mummies' Dearest''

Komende zaterdag 8 november, tussen 13.00 en 17.00 uur, opent de tentoonstelling 'Beelden Op Locatie', in Kookstudio Mix, Coolhaven 160b te Rotterdam. Met werken van Dorothé Arts, Petra Jongmans, Harry Schumacher, Jolanda Drukker Murray, Noortje Stortelder en natuurlijk van mijzelf.

Deze week heb ik de definitieve selectie gemaakt van Witty Art voor deze expositie. Ook deze keer was het niet makkelijk, het blijft altijd een kwestie van 'Kill Your Darlings'. Maar uiteindelijk kwam ik, zoals vaker, uit bij mijn, gevoelsmatige, eerste keuze. En in dit geval was dat de serie 'Mummies' Dearest'. Een reeks van (voor nu) zes werken die, losjes en op surrealistische wijze, verhalen over de liefde van een 'Mummy' voor haar kleintjes. Een serie over moederliefde, eigenlijk: 'Mummy will also love you, won't she?'

Eén van deze zes, 'Mummies' Dearest #4', was één van mijn zes inzendingen voor het afgelopen NOISE Festival (UK) en werd, samen met twee andere werken, beoordeeld als ''Excellent'' door curator en oprichter van het festival, Denise Proctor. Lees daarover meer hier. 

Deze en de vijf overige 'Mummies' Dearest' zijn dus vanaf 8 tot en met 30 november te zien tijdens Beelden Op Locatie op zaterdag en zondag van 13.00 tot 17.00 en daarbuiten op afspraak via het telefoonnummer: 06 21 400 060.

Three-Outta-Six! Witty Art Works rated as ''Excellent'' during this year's NOISE Festival

Absolutely awesome! Yesterday, I got the news that 3-out-of-the-6 Witty Art Works that I had submitted earlier this year to the NOISE Festival 2014, have been awarded with an 'Excellent' rating by none other than the festival's very own founder and CEO Denise Proctor.

So, what does that mean then? Well, as the NOISE Festival puts it, amongst others:
''Your fantastic work has been rated by a curator or member of our shortlist panel. Your work has all the hallmarks of excellence. It shows promise and we see big things ahead for you and your work.'' 

Now, THAT's something I definitely like to hear! 

Three.Out.Of.Six. Pretty much makes a 50/50 score, so that is really, really, really amazing to find out and a huge boost for not as much my own personal ego (sure, yes, it does - no need for false modesty here) but definitely for my belief in Witty Art! 

Entering NOISE 2014
When entering NOISE earlier this year, I have to admit, I was pretty anxious about it. Though having won prices in various (smaller) art competitions in The Netherlands before, I really felt this was stepping it up a notch. You see, it's no secret I'd like Witty Art to venture out into the world, as I'd like for people worldwide to be able and enjoy my work. So, showcasing your work internationally is a must - and the Noise Festival provided me with a great opportunity to do so.

So, when the news came last night that not one, not two, but three out of the six works got the mark ''EXCELLENT'', it was not just fab news to me, but a major recognition of my creative art work. Especially, as my work borders on the very edge of autonomous and illustration art, or rather, in the no man's land between the two of them, a place I like very much to dwell in.

So, which three Witty Art works were rated as ''Excellent'' then? Well, I have to say, they're three works I was already proud of, but now even more so. Here they are:

1. 'Silenced Minority #3'' (2013) SOLD

A series dear to my heart, and especially this one. A tale of oppression and what happens when the silent majority doesn't speak out in favour of minorities' rights but silences them by killing their voice. View this Witty Art Work and its official rating on my NOISE Portfolio here. 

2. ''A World To Be Blamed'' (2013)

3. "Mummies Dearest #4'' (2014) 

'Mummies' Dearest #4' is part of a series of (for now) six drawings, about that all-consuming 'Motherly Smotherly Love'. View this Witty Art Work and its official rating on my NOISE Portfolio here. 

And the great thing about this one is .. this one is about to be unveiled to the public and to be showcased LIVE as part of a group-exhibition from November 8th - 30th in my hometown Rotterdam.

Last but not least, I want to say a major thank you to the whole NOISE Festival 2014 team: management, curators, staff, volunteers and trainees alike for their hard work and effort into putting this together. And, a token of appreciation for all my fellow artists who have entered their work and shared their often amazing creativity with the world. I will definitely enter the NOISE Festival again in the future. 


 

Motherly, Smotherly Love but love none the less: ''Mummies' Dearest''

Another recent series that saw the light is ''Mummies' Dearest''. I have not yet dedicated an individual blogpost to this series, but as it's turned out to be one of my own personal favourites, I feel it's now time to write one. 

 
''Mummies' Dearest'' is all about a Mummy's enduring, all-consuming love for ''her'' little ones. Perhaps, not at all very healthy love. You could call it motherly, smotherly love, I suppose. But, nonetheless, still love. And in a cold, heartless, even dystopian world, any kind of love will do. Even for 'Mummmies'. 

Despite its rather heavy subject, somehow, I thoroughly enjoyed creating this series. I just took a liking towards the main character in the drawings, as she (yes, she is definitely a she, well, to me she is - feel free to think or feel otherwise) has some definite charm about her appearance, even though the whole scenery contains something disturbing. 

As someone recenty told me: ''Charmingly disturbing or disturbingly cute, can't exactly pinpoint what it is about your work in general and definitely about this series - but, for me, it's one of those two.''

For now, I have finished the first six drawings. There will be more. This is one of those series I feel I am not done with yet. It'll be interesting to see how this one will develop itself further. Will this end badly, like ''too much love will kill you in the end'' kinda thing or is there some kind of an escape route. Or is it really all that bad?

About both series:

''Mummies' Dearest'' is all about a Mummy's enduring, all-consuming love for ''her'' little ones. Perhaps, not at all very healthy love - but, nonetheless, still love. And in a cold, heartless, even dystopian world, any bit of love will do.

''Unforgiven'' was highly inspired by a quote taken from the book ''Crime and Punishment'', a creation of the great Russian writer Fyodor Dostoyevski:

To go wrong in one's own way is better then to go right in someone else's.

For now, I consider this two-piece to be finished, but you never know, I might change my mind in the future and some new images will appear in my mind.
