TEST L.A.B.: life in the madhouse or survival in the real world?

Today, finally got up to updating the Series' Page with some more works from the series "TEST L.A.B.(Lost Accidental Babies)". A series, involving a bunch of UnBunnies being held captive and used as guinea pigs in the hostile environment of a somewhat sinister research lab. What kinds of tests are being performed on them, is not exactly revealed, but judging by the look of them, it can't be any good.

The problem is, the world outside their artficial lab environment proves to be even more hazardous, as this series progresses. You see, sometimes, life in the madhouse actually seems preferable over survival in an outside world gone even madder.

 

All works are 21 x 15 cm (unframed) and were made using pencil, ink and watercolour on paper. Currently, I am working on a couple of bigger drawings for this series, as I am curious to discover what exactly goes on in their world - and in the world outside.

''Cornered": Switching from Single to Serial

''Cornered'' is a series I started working on during last year's fall. It actually didn't start out as a series, I thought the first drawing to be a one-off, like my other ''Single'' Works. But somehow this particular image came back in my mind, and started to appear on paper a couple of times. So, from ''single'' to ''serial'', so to speak, sometimes it just works that way.

Just black indian ink on paper, using various pens and pencils to create lines and texture. I kinda like this little creature trying to almost literally break away from the paper he (or she) feels trapped in. It's a fighter. I am happy to let this one return in a couple of more works and see where his fight to break free will take him/her.

The quote above pretty much touches the core of, ultimately, lies at the heart of my art work: living with human fragility. Learning to live with our imperfections rather than with our so-called qualities, and all that other ''human characteristics'' we so arrogantly think sets us apart from or even puts us above any other living species. As if the possesion of a larger brain and thus our ability to reason makes us the one and only surpreme lifeform on planet Earth. Well, personally, I don't think so.

I don't believe we humans are the superior life species on this planet. The most dominating, yes, absolutely but definitely not superior. Far from it, I'd say.

And that is a re-occuring theme in my work, I suppose. Like in the series ''Perfectly Imperfect MisFits'', which I started early 2011 and actually is one of my best-loved and best-selling series to this date. It seems people kinda fall in love with the rather ill-fated yet happily optimistic creatures who play the main lead in this series of drawings, made with pencil and ink. The whole series combined consists of out 30 drawings, some of which sold, others still waiting for a brandnew home.

As you can see, these are just little creatures, caught up in the bigger events of their time, some of them resisting it, others just going along with the flow, wherever that may take them.

After all, "It Ain't What You Do, It's The Way That You Do It'', as the late great Ella Fitzgerald once sang, in her superbly lighthearted, carefree, uplifting interpretation of the legendary classic, originally written by jazz musicians Melvin "Sy" Oliver and James "Trummy" Young. And sometimes, it's just that. No less, no more: ''Take it easy, then your jive will swing''.





The whole concept of human nature and its limited capacities is also notably visible in other works as well, such as ''Limited Human Resources'' (smartphone snapshot below), Egology'' and my interactive art project ''A Great Human''. 

Extra uitgave Managementboek 'Versimpelen' met Witty Art Illustraties

Naast autonoom beeldend kunstenaar ben ik ook actief als illustrator. In die hoedanigheid kwam ik in contact met Jan-Peter Bogers. Een gesprek op Facebook en een kop koffie in real life waren voldoende om tot een samenwerking te komen.

Jan-Peter doet, net als ik heel veel en kan ook heel veel. Hij is organisatie- en projectadviseur, spreker en trainer. Zo houdt hij zich onder meer bezig met teamsamenwerking, visietrajecten en het vertalen van visie naar concrete actie. Hij bijt zich graag vast in complexe vraagstukken om door middel van een scherpe analyse en een creatieve blik tot de kern te komen en te ontdekken dat het niet zo ingewikkeld is als we allemaal dachten. Jan-Peter weet iedereen tot versimpelen en actie te verleiden.

En daarmee weet hij als geen ander vastgelopen processen vlot te trekken. En daar houd ik van! Wie mijn werk als o.m. projectcoördinator en -organisator een beetje kent en volgt via mijn TWC Network Blog, weet dat ik een gruwelijke hekel heb aan nodeloos ingewikkeld doen, ellenlange marathonvergaderingen en allerlei ander soort ''gedoe'', waardoor een ogenschijnlijk klein project vaak uitloopt op een veelkoppig, zichzelf vermenigvuldigend monster waar allerlei partijen wat over te zeggen hebben. Of dat althans denken. 

'Versimpelen' is mij dan ook uit het hart gegrepen. Het boek biedt, op overzichtelijke en vlot leesbare manier, een aantal heel handige, zeg maar gerust ''simpele'' tools om van nodeloos moeilijk weer naar leuk en makkelijk te gaan. Het boek is rijkelijk voorzien van illustraties van de hand van Bas Bakker, begrijpend tekenaar, ook wel bekend als De Betekenaar.

Gratis PDF 'Versimpelen: Vijf Extra Tools'

Een tijdje terug werd bekend dat 'Versimpelen' op de shortlist stond voor Managementboek van het Jaar. Toen bleek dat hij naar aanleiding daarvan bezig was met een aanvullende uitgave 'Versimpelen: Vijf Extra Tools', in de vorm van een gratis downloadbare PDF. En hij was op zoek naar extra beeldmateriaal. Tweemaal raden waar ons gesprek op Facebook en tijdens de kop koffie over ging? 

Juist! In de uitgave 'Versimpelen: Vijf Extra Tools' zijn dus gewoon twee illustraties van mijn hand opgenomen. Waarmee ik in de voetsporen treed van iemand als Bas Bakker. Hoe tof is dat! Maar tof was ook de samenwerking met Jan-Peter, aangezien we beiden van het snelle schakelen zijn en wars van stroperigheid. En dat was ook nodig, gezien de korte tijdsspanne waarin e.e.a. gerealiseerd moest worden. Maar het is gelukt, en het resultaat mag gelezen en gezien worden. 

Een tipje van de sluier: hierbij één van de tekeningen die het niet is geworden.

Welke dan wel? Daarvoor moet je 'Versimpelen: Vijf Extra Tools' maar even inkijken. Downloaden is GRATIS en kan snel, makkelijk, dus simpel via deze link. 

Nieuwe serie Corporate cARToons

Voor mij is het ook een concrete aanleiding om op korte termijn een aantal series uit te werken, die vooral gaan over mijn ervaringen opgedaan tijdens het werken aan diverse projecten en binnen diverse uiteenlopende organisaties. Die series zullen mijn eigen kijk en beeld weergeven op de geheel eigen dynamiek binnen de wondere, zeg maar gerust soms ronduit wereldvreemde wereld van project- en interim management, interne en externe communicatietrajecten en dergelijke. Uiteindelijk zijn het toch allemaal mensen die het moeten doen en zeg nu zelf, geen mens dat beter in staat is om iets van heel makkelijk en overzichtelijk binnen no time naar een totaal ongrijpbaar, onbegrijpelijk complex geheel te brengen. 

Maar ook de ups en downs van zelfstandig (creatief) ondernemerschap komen aan bod, in een tijd van crisis, in een overvolle freelancers' markt en een krappe arbeidsmarkt; in een tijd van verandering en nieuwe kansen en mogelijkheden als het gaat om samenwerkingen, co-creatie en dergelijke.

Deze series vallen niet binnen het Singles- of Series-deel van Witty Art, zullen iets meer cartoonesk van aard zijn en krijgen dan ook een eigen pagina, waarschijnlijk onder de voorlopige titel 'Corporate cARToons'. Maar qua sfeer en verbeeldingskracht zullen ze veel gemeen hebben met een serie als 'Innovation In Corporation', waarin een Klein NoNijn probeert te overleven in een een corporate rat race.

'Series' page updated with ''Unforgiven'' and ''Mummies' Dearest''

Just updated the 'Series' page, adding a two piece created last year: ''Unforgiven'', and a whole new series I only recently started, called 'Mummies' Dearest.''

About both series:

''Mummies' Dearest'' is all about a Mummy's enduring, all-consuming love for ''her'' little ones. Perhaps, not at all very healthy love - but, nonetheless, still love. And in a cold, heartless, even dystopian world, any bit of love will do.

''Unforgiven'' was highly inspired by a quote taken from the book ''Crime and Punishment'', a creation of the great Russian writer Fyodor Dostoyevski:

To go wrong in one's own way is better then to go right in someone else's.

For now, I consider this two-piece to be finished, but you never know, I might change my mind in the future and some new images will appear in my mind. 

 

Almost Perfect: ''Perfectly Imperfect MisFits'' are just trying to get by

Time to dedicate a blogpost to my series ''Perfectly Imperfect MisFits'', which I started early 2011. At this moment, the whole series consists of out 30 drawings, some of which sold, others still waiting for a brandnew home. All of them simple black and white drawings, using pencil and ink on paper.

''Perfectly Imperfect MisFits'' actually is one of my best-loved and best-selling series to this date. It seems people kinda fall in love with the rather ill-fated yet happily optimistic creatures who play the main lead in this series of drawings.

As you can see, it's a series about little creatures, caught up by the bigger events of their time. Some of them try to resist, in vain, others just go with the flow and see where the currents take them. Will they wash up on the shore of a deserted island or will the ocean stream take them to their next safe haven, perhaps a place where they can rebuild their lifes? But how do you try and rebuild your life, when you can't take control of it, when other powers are pulling the strings? 

Big questions, to which these little creatures have no real answers. They just get by. And perhaps that is why people are taken in by them so much. Yes, they might be MisFits, yes, they might be far-from-perfect and celebrate their failures rather than their successes, but boy, are they good at it. Almost perfect, I'd say.

Oh, by the way .. : at some computer screens, the images might appear to be a bit ''over-pixeled'' (not sure what the right phrase is, sorry folks). This is certainly on the case with the original images before uploading them. So no idea what happened there. This ''distortion'' only appears the case in Blogger, it doesn't occur when uploading the same low res pics on, for instance, my Facebook page. Weird! 

Will try and figure that out a.s.a.p. In the meantime, if any of my followers have a suggestion, please let me know. Thanks in advance! 

New additions to Witty Art series ''Silenced Minority''

Time for another update on one of the series most dear to me: ''The Silenced Minority''. In two earlier posts, I already told a bit about my inspiration for this particular series. You can read them here (in English) and here (in Dutch).

Basically, the series is about the oppression of outcasts in a repressive society. A society, where minorities are slowly but surely, determinedly, being forced into the margins of society, stripped from their rights and robbed of their voices. A grim vision, perhaps? Well, unfortunately, even in today's world it's still reality for a whole lot of people worldwide. 

And perhaps I am not the one to climb on barricades, or the most politically active or outspoken, I do believe we, who happen to live in freedom, all have a choice, and a voice to go along with it. My voice happens to be my art. I hope, one way or the other, it will not go lost and unheard but it will touch some of people's minds out there. And, even more importantly, your hearts.

When the Majority remains Silent, the minority's voice goes unheard or is put quiet: The Silenced Minority.
